Caravan Electrical Repairs
Caravan electrical repairs (including trailers) occour more often than you think. Most common issues that turn into faults are:
- Wear and Tear or old cabling
- Rodent damage
- Poor modifications/DIY
- Driving on rough terrain
Most of the time the fault may be quite simple like a broken or damaged cable, faulty fuse or switch. The issue comes when trying to track down the fault, all caravans and trailers are wired the same right?
Wrong, wiring harnesses and wiring placement change often, this happens when minor modifications are made from the factory all the way to DIY changes.
Before you panic
Yes, when things dont work it can get stressfull, especially if it is with something that brings happiness into your life.
Now the first thing you are going to do is jump onto youtube and search the problem, ja, dosent matter that its an american and they work with different voltages and equpment.
Once you have spent 3 days with your research and got a plan, spend an entire weekend and several trips to builders wharehouse you manage to sort out the problem! Well done, but, what if it did not work or made it worse?

Why we want the caravan or trailer in the workshop?
Here is the truth (this has happened to several clients). Yes we all want it repaired at home so we dont have to drive it somewhere and go pick it up later. So after searching on Facebook and Google you find a guy that comes out to you. Awsome!
The issues were as follows:
- Battery going flat, no power when not connect to power inlet.
- 1 x plug and 1 x light not working.
So, guy arrives on time, nice bakkie ,cleanly dressed, great stuff! Spends around 3 hours busy with the caravan. Plug sorted, new wire for the light, battery needs to be replaced. Client agrees, guy leaves and comes back +/- 1hr later, battery sorted.
Client tests everything all working, lekker.
One week later, weekend trip. Power goes out at camp, normally happens on busy weekends, all working fine. Next day, power came on somtime in the night, all seems fine. At around 8pm fridge and lights go off. Check alles, looks good, power is connected, plug works. It’s ok leaving in the morning anyway.
We had the caravan for two days checking everything, this is what we found:
- Battery charger not working.
- Plug circuit breaker bypassed (circuit breaker replaced)
- New cable for the light was joined with tape on the wire that supplied the 12v water pump.
- Issue with existing cable for the light – blown fuse.
It is unfortunate that it was not done correctly but here is the reason why. When someone is working at a client site they are pushed for time, limited spares, limited tools or they could just be there to make a quick buck.
When we have the caravan or trailer by us we have access to the correct:
- Tools and Equipment.
- Correct spares or order correct spares.
- Time to inspect, diagnose and test correctly.
- Installed correctly with a warranty on the products.
So this is why we want the caravan or trailer in the workshop and so should you. We may not have the faciest workshop in town but we do both honest and quality work, the same goes for our Battery and Solar System installations.
